Getting a Grant

I need to buy a trampoline with a handle on it and I found an AWESOME one on Southpaw's website. The only problem is we're just poor college students. Well, my husband is. He is a grad student at BYU and he gets paid part time to be a research assistant. Next semester he'll be teaching again part time but he gets the same amount of money. He also teaches Astronomy at UVU two nights a week but it's just not enough to cover all our expenses. Not to mention a $335 trampoline. I applied for a grant to get a therapy swing for Marshall and got it but I'm worried they won't give me another grant. Does anyone know where I can find out about places that will buy these things for you? The place I got the swing from was Challenged America. They have a $500 limit so this is not over that limit. I think I'll try it but don't know where to go if they say no. We need a small indoor trampoline. My downstairs neighbors agree. They're nice enough but they get upset when Marshall jumps (which is constantly). Lately, he's been flapping his hands and jumping A TON. He always does but he's doing it even more lately, if that's possible. He's getting more defiant again too. I'm not convinced that upping his dose of Risperdal is a good thing. He just gets used to it and we're back to square one again. I don't know what to do.

Good luck. I have never applied for a grant for Tyler. Since getting long term care I have never paid out of pocket. i hope you can get something. That outside stimulation is so important. Sometimes it feels like the only thing that keeps them going

Do you need one that has a bar? If so, I'm no help. Is Marshall still young enough for EIP? Sometimes they let you borrow things for 3-6 months if they have an extra one. (that's what we're doing with Reagan's walker)

But, I DO have just a regular indoor trampoline that we used when we were trying to teach Jaylee how to jump. You're more than welcome to have it if you'd like.

I am still new at most of this stuff, we are just geting going with things like that for our little Josh. I'm sorry I don't know anything, but if you have any info, that would be great for me. We are in need of some stuff here and have no way to buy it. Good luck!

Try asking his therapists. Our therapists have always been in the know when it comes to finding resources for help. Up North, the Weber School District has "The Foundation" that helps with things like that. There are also seasonal things like "The Christmas Tree Jubilee" or community service groups like the Rotary club, or the Elks lodge. We had a real neat experience with our local Elks club paying for M.K.'s wheelchair. They were SO NICE, and SO LOVING. They are heaven-sent for sure. Good luck!

There is a similar trampoline on www.onestepahead.com for only $99....worth looking at!

I need to get back to the OT soon so I'll ask her. She said she wants him to have a trampoline with springs, not elastic, which means they cost more money. Darn it!! Thanks for finding that one though. If it weren't for the fact that he needs springs, that one would be perfect (and something our tax refund could go towards.)

We are poor students also, it is not fun! Have you tried ksl.com? I have had a lot of luck with that. Or maybe look into renting one from a medical supply company. I will keep my eyes open and see what I can find. I will also ask around about grants.
Good Luck!

Options For Independence in northern Utah helped pay for my childs walker.

Check your local Independence Center (Utah):

Lori- I have an indoor trampoline (that is completely trashed thanks to my sister) but he needs one with a handle because he's so reckless and uncoordinated. Thanks so much for the kind offer. I appreciate it.
